The biggest international football tournament in the world, the World Cup, is just around
Every four years the biggest and best national football teams in the world get together and compete against each other in order to get their hands on the prestigious trophy.
In the build up to this summer’s tournament, the World Cup odds suggest that current champions Germany are the favourites to win the trophy for the second time running.
The European nation have won the trophy four times since the World Cup’s inaugural tournament in 1930, and they will be looking to add to their tally this summer. Should they manage to win the trophy yet again, they will become the joint-most successful team to compete in the tournament along with second favourites Brazil.
This year’s competition is the 21st edition of the tournament, scheduled to take place from the 14th June to the 15th July 2018. Like every World Cup since 1998, 32 national teams will be competing in the tournament, 31 of which had to go through continental qualifying rounds in order to compete this summer.
The first team to qualify for the tournament, excluding the hosts Russia, was five time winners Brazil. The South American nation had a mixed start to their qualifying campaign, but an impressive unbeaten streak meant they ended up finishing top of the group and ten points clear of second place Uruguay.
Meanwhile in Europe, current World Cup champions Germany managed to qualify with ease after winning every single one of their ten games in their group, scoring 43 goals and only conceding four.
This summer’s tournament will be the first time that it will be held in Russia, and the first
time since 2006 that it will be held in Europe. As a result, this guide has been created which gives fans some vital information they will need to know before making the trip to Russia.
Information such as the emergency numbers, the Russian calling code, and some common Russian phrases you may have to use whilst in the country have all been included.
Some do’s and don’ts to follow have also been included. However, the main feature of this guide is some of the maps included. Each map highlights the nearest stadium in the city as well as some key locations surrounding it such as hotels, restaurants, and transportation links.
