As Arsene Wenger continues to search for another defensive midfielder, the Frenchman could be about to turn his attention to Newcastle and Cheick Tiote, reports Metro. The Magpie is said to be unsettled in England’s North East, and could be about to move to the North of London in order to get his career back on track.
At 28 years old, Tiote represents a player who is about to enter into the peak years of his playing career. Having spent the past 4 seasons at Newcastle, he also has a wealth of Premier League experience behind him. The Cote d’Ivoire international also offers an attractive degree of versatility within his game, being able to play as a centre-midfielder as well as a centre-back. Given that Wenger has also recently lost Thomas Vermaelen from his ranks, that part of Tiote’s game could be especially key to the Gunners’ interest.
From a Newcastle perspective, Alan Pardew and Saint James’ Park are thought to value the player at around £8 million. Metro suggests that there is interest in Tiote from two Russian clubs, and that Pardew would prefer to sell abroad. However, should Arsenal meet, or even better, the Tiote asking price, then an Emirates bid could prove too tempting to turn down.
Should the Gunners push forward and make an official offer to bring Tiote to their club, then the Ivorian would become the latest in a long list of significant summer purchases made by Wenger. The manager has already brought in the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers as he looks to mount a more substantial assault on the Premier League crown next season.
