Arsenal are preparing to sell Ignasi Miquel to Norwich City for a transfer fee of around £1.5 million, reports the Daily Mail. The Spanish defender has struggled to establish himself at the North London club, and is set to move to the Championship side before the transfer window closes.
It had been thought that Miquel would remain at the club despite his peripheral status this summer, following the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona. With the Belgian international exiting the Emirates Stadium, Arsene Wenger has been left with just Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as specialist centre-backs.
However, Norwich look to have successfully got their man, and a deal is ecpected to be reached over the weekend. At 21 years old, Miquel represents an investment for the Canaries’ future, as he is still a player around which there is considerable excitement. He has not been able to break through the Arsenal ranks, but he could thrive at a less high-profile club.
The move also means that Arsenal will almost definitely recruit another defender before the transfer market shuts on Monday. The Gunners have Calum Chambers to fill in should injury strike their squad, but are otherwise understaffed. Having seen a bid to bring Greek international Kostas Manolas into the fold rejected, Wenger will now have to turn his attention elsewhere, and quickly.
