Southampton’s Dejan Lovren has caused quite a stir amongst the Premier League clubs since his issuing of a transfer request earlier this month. Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur had been about to battle it out for the defenders signature, but Arsenal have now joined the list of potential Lovren suitors, reports talkSPORT.
The player came to prominence last season as part of a Southampton side that surprised and delighted the Premier League. Although the Saints became most widely known for their attacking quality, Lovren was one of a range of defenders who also proved their worth, including England’s Luke Shaw.
Tottenham had emerged as early favourites to sign the Croatian international due to the good relationship that their manager, Mauricio Pochettino, holds with the player. However, whilst Spurs can only offer Europa League football next year, Liverpool, and now Arsenal, are gearing up for Champion’s League action.
With two of the Premier League’s top four now rumoured to be interested in him, Lovren might find it difficult to turn either the Reds or the Gunners down. His previous experience of working under Pochettino will count for a lot, but Europe’s elite competition is what most players are aiming to be involved in.
For Arsenal, Lovren will be brought in amid speculation linking Thomas Vermaelen with a move away from the Emirates Stadium. Having already lost Bacary Sagna so far this summer, Arsene Wenger is becoming increasingly keen to add another face to his backline forces.
