Arsene Wenger is looking to conclude his long-running search for a world class defensive midfielder, and has made an offer for Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira, reports Metro. Arsenal are believed to have tabled a bid worth £23.8 million in order to sign the player which they deem will be the answer to their attack-heavy midfield problems.
Khedira is rumoured to be on his way out of Real Madrid, having fallen down the pecking order for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The player, who is currently representing Germany at this summer’s World Cup finals, suffered injury throughout much of his last season at the Bernabeu, and has seen his position taken from him as a result.
Arsenal are keen to offer Khedira a fresh star, and they will be looking to finalise a deal before their rivals can outbid them. The midfielder has been especially linked with Chelsea this year, as Jose Mourinho is thought to be a big fan. However, reports in Spain suggest that Arsenal have stolen the momentum with regards to this transfer, as they are the first to issue an offer.
According to El Mundo Deportivo, the Gunners submitted their bid on Wednesday night, and they are awaiting a response from the European champions. Wenger is clearly desperate to find a solution to the Arsenal holding midfield role – a position which has largely stood open ever since Patrick Vieira hung up his boots for the club.
It is believed that Khedira is the right man to add strength and stability to the North London side’s set-up, and it is reported that Wenger has set German teammate, Mesut Ozil, the task of convincing the player that a move to London is the right one.
