Former Liverpool and Fulham defender, John Arne Riise, has confirmed that Aston Villa are one of the clubs interested in signing him this summer, reports Inside Futbol. The Norwegian is a free agent at present having parted company with Fulham, who were eventually relegated from the Premier League last term.
Riise is best known for the role he played at Liverpool during the 2000s. Between 2001 and 2008, Riise made 234 league appearances for the Reds, scoring 31 goals. He proved himself a willing runner, a decent passer, and a scorer of fine, long range efforts. The full-back was also involved in the Anfield side which lifted the European Cup in 2005.
Speaking of his immediate future, Riise would not be drawn on his preferences, but he did confirm interest coming in from Villa. ‘There is interest from several English teams and Aston Villa are one of these,’ said the defender, ‘I’ll take time to choose the best option for me and my family.’
At 33 years old, he could offer Aston Villa a wealth of Premier League experience. Money is tight at Villa Park this season following Randy Lerner’s decision to sell the club, but Riise could become an especially valuable free transfer. With 110 international caps under his belt as well, Riise could provide the top level know-how to help the Villains avoid a relegation scrap.
