Manchester United are expected to replace Louis Van Gaal with Jose Mourinho this summer, and Atletico Madrid are hoping to use that to their advantage.
The Red Devils are struggling under the Dutch boss this term, sitting down in fifth place in the Premier League, 12 points off the top of the table, with 12 matches remaining.
Mourinho is claimed to be ready to take over from Van Gaal, once their side’s quest to finish in the top four ends unsuccessfully, leading to question marks over the future of Juan Mata.
The Spaniard was axed from Chelsea’s starting line-up on his arrival at Stamford Bridge in 2013, before being sold six months later, and he could once again be sold on by the Portuguese.
Atletico Madrid are now said to be confident of striking a deal to sign Mata, although recent reports claim their manager Diego Simeone could be joining Chelsea this summer.
