Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was keen on landing a deal to sign Christian Benteke from Aston Villa this summer, but his own club thwarted his attempts, the Star reports.
The Belgian striker joined Liverpool this summer, in a £32.5 Million transfer, and he has scored three Premier League goals in his seven outings so far this term.
Benteke is now reported to have appeared close to a move to Stamford Bridge, with manager Jose Mourinho keen on his signature.
The Portugese boss is said to have spoken to star winger Eden Hazard about the prospect of signing the striker, as well as making contact with the player’s agent about a potential move.
The Liverpool forward is said to have been open to the switch, before the Chelsea board refused their manager the funds to complete the deal.
The Blues ended up losing out on the 24 year-old to their rivals, and instead sealed the arrival of Radamel Falcao on a temporary deal, despite his previous failings for Manchester United last term.
