Everyone is talking about whether Chelsea can win their second Premier League title in three years, and their rivals are currently making it easy for them. By Adam Roberts.
After Liverpool’s loss to Swansea City, followed by draws for Manchester United, Tottenham and Manchester City, the Blues went into their Sunday fixture with the possibility of building their lead up to eight points, and Arsenal were so close to allowing them the chance to go nine clear, needing a 97th minute penalty from Alexis Sanchez to move into second place. The 2015 title winners took their opportunity with both hands, with Diego Costa returning to the first-team following heavy speculation regarding his future, scoring the opening goal of the 2-0 win over Hull.
Chelsea ended 2016 in first place of the Premier League, and with their recent play, it doesn’t seem like any team is going to be able to catch them.
Tottenham and Manchester City seem to be the most likely candidates to catch Chelsea. The North-London side in particular have looked extremely impressive recently, including when they ended the runaway leader’s winning streak with a dominant 2-0 win.
January Transfer Window News
One of the most interesting things about the Premier League is how there is a transfer window right at the start of the calendar year. It certainly is a good way to generate added interest in the league. It appears that Manchester United will be content just to be sellers during the window even though they are in sixth place in the Premier League.
One of the more interesting January transfer rumours involves Chelsea. The Premier League leaders are looking to acquire Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace as an insurance policy in case Costa is serious about making a move to the Chinese Super League.
Teams have not spent much money yet, suggesting that this will either be a light winter transfer window or that the action will heat up as the window draws to a close at the end of the month. There will likely be a lot of action over the last week of January as teams make a bid to shore their squads up to fight hard to the finish.
The Sanchez Situation
Alexis Sanchez’s time at Arsenal may be nearing an end. He was visibly upset with his teammates after a 3-3 draw against Bournemouth earlier this month. After the game, he apparently refused to talk to anyone in the locker room. Many Arsenal fans are convinced that their star striker wants to leave, and it would be devastating for the club if he does so.
Some possible destinations for the Chilean international include Chelsea, Bayern Munich and the Chinese Super League. With only 18 months left on his contract, Arsenal may be forced to sell Sanchez this summer to try to get some kind of value for him before he leaves.
