Everton are the latest Premier League side to be linked with a move for Cardiff City’s Steven Caulker, reports the Daily Mail. Caulker has attracted a lot of attention since the Bluebirds were relegated from the Premier League last season.
There is a reported £8 million release clause in the player’s contract, following Cardiff’s falling out of the English top flight, and Everton are thought to be comfortable with that sum. Roberto Martinez is an admirer of the player, and he is said to be seeking cover for Sylvain Distin, who is coming toward the end of his career.
At 22, Caulker would represent a real future investment, and he already has a wealth of experience behind him. A product of the Tottenham Hotspur youth side, the player has also had loan spells at both Cardiff and Swansea City.
He is being monitored by a range of clubs, however, and Everton will face some stiff opposition to in their quest to secure his signature. Crystal Palace, Swansea and Southampton are all rumoured to be interested, and Everton’s league rivals, Arsenal, are also in the hunt.
The Gunners have already lost Bacary Sagna to Manchester City, and they look likely to lose Thomas Vermaelen to Manchester United. The back-line has suddenly become a real problem area for Arsene Wenger, and he might turn to Caulker in order to solve it.
According to the Daily Mail, Everton have other targets lined up as well. The Dutch international pair of Bruno Martins Indi and Stefan de Vrij are also on the club’s radar.
