At 39 years old, Alessandro del Piero has no intentions to retire from football just yet, and has spoken about his interest in joining the Scottish Premiership champions, Celtic, according to reports in the English press. Del Piero is most known for his 19 years as a Juventus player, although he has staged talks with the Parkhead club in the past.
In 2012, del Piero parted company with Juventus, and he was subsequently searching for another club. Talks with Celtic were extensive, but the Italian hero eventually opted for a move to Australia with Sydney FC. The striker has since scored 24 goals in the 2 years that he was competing down under, and is looking for one final challenge in his illustrious career.
Speaking about a potential move to Celtic, del Piero said, ‘Two years ago it was interesting and it would be interesting again. If we could talk then great.’ The Italian continued, ‘ Celtic are a great team and I have always enjoyed playing in Scotland, so who knows?’
It remains to be seen whether the new Celtic manager, Ronny Deila, is interested in bringing the experienced Serie A legend into his new-look squad, but should he do so then it would surely become one of the most surprising transfers of the summer.
Celtic will be looking to win the Scottish Premiership again next season, but they will also be looking to improve on their efforts in the Champion’s League. Until now the club have often produced valiant performances in the elite competition, but they are yet to mount a notable run in the tournament.
