The six-man shortlist for January’s Premier League Player of the Month award has been revealed, and I believe I have shortened it down to two.
Tottenham, Liverpool, Southampton, Manchester City, Leicester City and Sunderland are all represented by one player on the shortlist, but I believe the latter two will fight it out for the win.
The shortlist is as follows:
Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur)
Roberto Firmino (Liverpool)
Jermaine Defoe (Sunderland)
Sergio Aguero (Man City)
Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester)
Virgil Van Dijk (Southampton)
Dele Alli is a shoo in for this season’s Young Player of the Year award, but I have to let him go for the running of the monthly trophy, despite his wondergoal which he scored against Crystal Palace, but he will have plenty more opportunities to take this crown.
Roberto Firmino is also being disregarded, despite scoring two braces against Norwich City and Arsenal, earning his club a 5-4 win and a 3-3 draw.
On goals, Defoe scored one hat-trick and one brace for Sunderland, earning them two wins in January, as they look to steer clear of the relegation zone.
Although I can see a rare awarding of a goalkeeper’s exploits this month, as Schmeichel has kept his high-flying side at the top of the league with his displays this month.
The Foxes star conceded only one goal in January, keeping three clean sheets, including having travelled to a very-much in-form Tottenham side, and denying them a goal.
