Liverpool are reported in the Metro as having entered into talks with Borussia Dortmund over the capture of Mats Hummels.
The German international was heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford over the past 12 months, with the defender even confirming the interest from United toward the end of last season, and claiming they were the only club that could tempt him to quit Dortmund.
In March, Hummels said: “If I was to transfer abroad at some stage, then it would only be to Manchester United”.
Things have changed since that statement however, with his then-boss Jurgen Klopp having agreed to leave the BVB, and is now the manager of Liverpool FC.
Hummels is said to be unsettled under new boss Thomas Tuchel, and could be keen on a reunion with his former boss in England.
Negotiations are claimed to be under way between the two clubs, and should a deal be striked, Man United will have missed out on another key target to their rivals, having lost Nicolas Otamendi and Pedro to Manchester City and Chelsea during the summer.
