Liverpool are hoping to win the race to sign Nicolas N’Koulou from Marseille, the DailyStar reports.
The 25 year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and has so far failed to agree terms over an extension to his current deal.
Chelsea and Lazio are both expected to try and sign him in January, either on pre-contract terms or on a cut-price winter deal, but the Anfield club have now emerged as keen suitors for his signature.
Marseille have struggled to keep pace at the top of the table so far this season, dropping to 13th place in Ligue 1, and are heavily expected to lose star striker Michy Batshuayi in the near future also.
The Belgian striker has notched eight of the club’s 18 league goals this term, and would be a huge loss, and losing the defender would also come as a huge blow.
N’Koulou has been paired in central defence alongside 20 year-old Karim Rekik this term, although they did sign 30 year-old Rolando from Porto in the previous window, but would still leave them with a relatively inexperienced defensive squad.
