Former Barcelona chief Andoni Zubizarreta has revealed that they were not interested in signing Luis Suarez, until their attempts to sign Sergio Aguero were rejected.
Manchester City refused to sell Aguero to Barcelona, which led to the club to pursue a deal for Suarez instead.
The former chief also insisted that the biting incident helped them to get a deal over the line, with clubs worrying about how long his ban will be etc.
Zubizarreta said: “We had a few options. Our first choice was not Suarez — he knows this.
“In the winter, we tried to sign Aguero. But it didn’t come off.
“In this situation, there was no doubt: Luis Suarez became our only objective.”
The club can be happy with the way the deal went down, with their preferred target continually struggling for fitness, and the Uruguayan seemingly having put his worst actions behind him.
Suarez is widely considered to be the best striker in the world, although a fully-fit Aguero could give him a run for his money, while Robert Lewandowski is most likely the only other challenger for that title.
