Manchester United are reported to have agreed a deal to sign Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica this summer, the Star reports.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with the Argentine winger, whilst Angel Di Maria was working on his exit from the club.
Gaitan replaced the now Paris Saint-Germain player in Benfica’s squad when Di Maria moved to Real Madrid in 2010, and is now claimed to have been close to doing the same at Old Trafford.
United are said to have agreed to pay £22 Million to the Portuguese giants, before Louis Van Gaal decided to look elsewhere in his bid to bolster his squad.
The Manchester club completed deals to sign Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial to their attacking positions, instead of the Argentine, and Gaitain ended up staying with Benfica.
Liverpool were also believed to be keen on signing the winger, although they did manage to persuade Roberto Firmino to join the club.
