Man United and Arsenal told to pay £12M for defensive star

The Independent has claimed that Aston Villa have slapped a £12 Million price-tag on their captain Ron Vlaar, who has been attracting interest from both Arsenal and Manchester United.

Vlaar is into the last nine months of his current deal, and is rumoured to be haggling with Villa over a contract, with no agreement seemingly close.

Manchester United’s boss Louis Van Gaal has worked with the 29 year-old at international level, and had a very successful World Cup campaign together this summer. Vlaar was a key feature for the Holland side that finished third in Brazil, and has been linked with a reuniting at Old Trafford for months.

The Red Devils have been much criticised for their failure to bolster their defence this summer, after the losses of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand who both left at the end of last season. They have been forced to give senior débuts to more than one reserve defender so far this season,  and are firmly expected to sign reinforcements in the coming window.
