Last season, although Liverpool had a very strong team unit, there was an undoubted superstar in amongst their pack – Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan is no longer an Anfield player, however, and he departs with more than just his hefty goal tally. The player became an icon on Merseyside, and Reds fans will need a new hero.
Raheem Sterling certainly has potential talisman material. A home-grown player, he is arguably the most exciting character on the pitch for Liverpool now. Still a young man, he has some years of development left to navigate before he can be considered within the same breath as Suarez, but the attacking midfielder is certainly exciting to watch.
Emerging onto the scene last season, it might have been expected that Sterling would shine less at the beginning of this campaign, but not so. There have been masses of new recruits added to the ranks at Liverpool, but the 19 year old is still capturing headlines. In 3 appearances he has scored two goals, and his place in the team does not look to be under threat.
If anything, Sterling has grown into his role at Anfield, and looks an even more frightening player than he was last season. There is a swagger to his play that, if handled by Brendan Rodgers correctly, could turn into real class. The Englishman looks thoroughly at home with Liverpool now, and he looks to be a very major part of the team’s deadly attack.
Suarez may have gone, but the SAS need not have disbanded. Daniel Sturridge and Sterling could prove just as effective. From a Liverpool and England point of view, the future looks very bright for those two.
