The European Championships are drawing ever closer, with the recent international friendlies having wet our appetite for some exciting football to watch this summer.
England beat world champions Germany, which led to the ‘this could be our year’ memes, but for a better, betting on England to win the tournament would be more for sentimentality than for belief, but at 9/1 (10.0) I wouldn’t try too hard to put you off. My preferred sentimental bet would be for Tottenham’s Harry Kane to continue his emphatic season by leading the scoring charts for the upcoming tournament, at a roundabout 22/1 (23.0), which would pay out 11/2 odds if backed it each-way.
If the tournament is anything like this year’s Premier League, than we need to look outside away from the favourites to find the winner, and I’m all for finding some value picks for the big tournaments.
Belgium look a great pick for the outright winners market, at between 10/1 (11.0) and 12/1 (13.0), but there is some serious value to be found in the top goalscorer betting.
Following on from the value pick to win the tournament, main striker Romelu Lukaku can be found at odds of 18/1 (19.0) to top the goalscoring charts, while team-mate Kevin De Bruyne is a much better each-way shout at a huge 40/1 (41.0), meaning a pay-out of 10/1 (11.0) should he simply make the top four.
Outside of Belgium however, I’m a big fan of Dimitri Payet, and following his emphatic free kick goals in the past two weeks, including a monstrous strike on his France debut, the 50/1 (51.0) available for him to lead the goalscoring charts is huge. The midfielder has been amazing all season, and will also be reasonable fresh for the tournament having missed half of the season through injury (much-like De Bruyne).
