Gus Poyet and Sunderland have held talks with the former Chelsea star, Salomon Kalou, reports the Express. The Black Cats are looking to edge out other Premier League interest in a bid to bring the Cote d’Ivoire international back to the English top flight.
Kalou played for French Ligue 1 side Lille last season, although he has been tipped to leave the club this summer. Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal have all been linked with the player before now, but it is Sunderland who look to be stealing an advantage in the race to sign him.
The 29 year old is said to be keen on moving to Sunderland, after meeting with the club over the weekend. Poyet is likely able to offer Kalou regular first-team opportunities as part of his side’s attacking line-up, which is something that the player struggled to achieve during his spell at Chelsea.
In 6 years at Stamford Bridge, Kalou was able to find the back of the net 60 times, and provide 44 assists as well. Given that he was often deployed as a second striker behind compatriot Didier Drogba, his efforts in the Premier League earned Kalou considerable praise. Should Sunderland be successful in signing him, then Poyet will hope that the Ivorian can rediscover his form in order to help the North East club avoid a relegation scrap akin to last season.
