Tottenham failed in late deadline day bid for Champions League star

It has emerged that Tottenham made a late attempt to sign Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City last month.

The Algerian winger was last season’s PFA Player of the Year, winning the Premier League title with Leicester in a story of dreams. This term has not been quite so impressive however, and a move could have proved worth the gamble.

Mahrez’s current side are struggling to keep pace in any shape or form this term, and have surpassed last season’s dismal term of Chelsea’s as champions, and currently look like they could be dragged into a relegation battle.

They are living the dream thus far in the Champions League on the flip side, having topped their group, but don’t look like they will be able to carry on that run for too much longer.

The 25 year-old has now been revealed to have been the subject of a transfer offer from Tottenham Hotspur last month, with the North-London side desperately trying to close the gap on the league leaders.

Leicester appear to have failed to consider selling their star man however, but their stance will surely be forced come the summer.

Mahrez was linked with a host of top clubs including Real Madrid, Arsenal and Chelsea last summer, and his ability is certainly not worthy of battling relegation, or even settling for mid-table finishes, which will have to be the Foxes target should they survive the drop.

Riyad will have three years remaining on his Leicester contract come the end of the season, and will likely fetch in excess of £25 Million, but their relegation could see his value drop considerably.

Is Mahrez better suited to Tottenham, another Premier League club or a top Spanish side?
