There has been considerable interest surrounding Joleon Lescott following Manchester City’s decision to release the player this summer. West Brom have become the latest Premier League side to be heavily linked with the player, and a deal could be very close to completion, reports the Daily Mail.
Alan Irvine is yet to make a signing since taking over at the Hawthorns, but he knows Lescott very well from the player’s time at Everton. For Irvine, their past relationship will prove key as he and the Baggies try to outbid a host of other teams that are monitoring the player.
‘You’ve got to know the personality’, said Irvine as he explained why a move for Lescott is a good one, ‘I know him really well and have no doubts on that side’. Irvine went on to praise the former Wolverhamton Wanderers defender for his professionalism, and explained that West Brom are in need of some proven talent such as his.
Previously, Hull City had seemed to be favourites to land Lescott’s signature, as they had tabled a 2 year contract for the 31 year old with the possibility of an extension. Lescott had also been linked with Stoke City, and a host of teams in the MLS, European leagues, and the Middle East. However, it is thought that they player would prefer to stay in England, and West Brom now seems the most likely destination.
