Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that Mesut Ozil is struggling to play to his full potential due to confidence issues.
The German international is Gunners record signing, but has been outshone by team-mate Alexis Sanchez this season.
Ozil has now been confirmed as having a crisis of confidence at this crucial part of the season. Maybe he should try hitting the slots in order to try and change his luck.
Arsene Wenger has now called for him to need to get his name back on the scoresheet, in order to lift his spirits once more.
“It’s time for him to score again,” Wenger said.
“Maybe he will find confidence back as well, because he misses chances. He has chances and he misses the chances that don’t look not feasible for him.
“I felt he did not feel confident [against Hull]. It’s always a problem because you think he can deliver something special but it’s true that technically he missed things that he is not used to.”
“I don’t know – it can happen,” Wenger added.
“I don’t know any specific reason. I had a chat with him [on Friday].”
Ozil is certainly not the complete player that he was for us last year, but was scoring more regularly for us early in the campaign that he had done in his entire time for us, which means is cant all be about goals.
Mesut’s goalscoring was mostly in the system which accommodates Sanchez as a centre-forward, and stopped once he moved back to bring Giroud in, and he may well find himself in front of goal more often now we have reverted back to our previous ways.
Theo Walcott was central to Alexis playing there, and his return has triggered Giroud to find his spot on the bench once more, which will come as a surprise to some given the Frenchman’s consistent scoring this term.
Will a goal boost Ozil’s morale? Is his contract issues holding him back?
