Manchester City are said to be lining up a shock move for Stoke City centre back, Ryan Shawcross. The 26 year old defender has impressed again this year at the Britannica, and was recently voted the club’s player of the season.
The move will come as a surprise considering the names that are usually linked with the Etihad. Shawcross is not glamorous, he hasn’t won many medals, and isn’t particularly a champion of ‘beautiful football’ – but he is one thing… English! Manchester City are looking to bolster their amount of home-grown players, in order to comply to regulations. With the likes of Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott set to leave, City must buy British!
Shawcross could definitely be more that a name on the team sheet, though. During his time at Stoke City he has evolved into a very valuable, desirable player. Two or Three years ago he was known just as a hard tackler in the middle of a team that played ‘ugly’ football. Now, he is as hard in the tackle, but has gained a reputation for being good on the ball as well. Stoke have changed their tactics, and Shawcross has changed his image.
Newcastle United are also linked with the player, who has been valued at £12 million. Stoke manager, Mark Hughes, has said that he doesn’t want to lose his centre back, but if City or the Magpies are prepared to meet Shawcross’s asking price, the it is expected that the Britannia won’t be able to say no!
