Manchester City defender Micah Richards is set for a surprise move to the Serie A outfit Fiorentina, reports Sky Sports. The England international turned down an offer to extend his contract at City this summer, as he seeks a fresh start and more regular first-team action.
Richards has flown into the Italian city of Florence in order to take a medical examination and finalise personal terms with his prospective new club. Should a deal be finalised before the transfer window closes, then it will represent the third piece of business that has been done between City and Fiorentina within the past two seasons – Matja Nastasic and Stevan Jovetic both swapped the Italian team for the current Premier League champions.
Richards will head to Italy with one eye on his international career as well. A product of the Man City youth academy, the defender was seen as one of the most promising rising stars in England at one point. However, he is now 26 years old and has failed to make an impression in an England shirt.
A career at Fiorentina will hopefully lead to more first-team opportunities for Richards, as well as a more rounded football education. The player has been linked with a move to various Premier League clubs as well this season, but looks to have opted to play in a foreign league. A choice which is quite unusual for English players, it might earn him more regular call-ups to the national team in the future.
