Manchester United could be about to hijack Arsenal’s interest in the Sporting Lisbon midfielder, William Carvalho, reports the Independent. The Red Devils are searching for a decent holding midfield player, and could be about to raid the Portuguese club for one of their star performers.
United have already dealt with Sporting once this summer, agreeing a £16 million fee for Marcos Rojo, but they could be about to turn to the European club once again as Louis Van Gaal looks to build a better squad. Carvalho had been available for upwards of £35 million at the beginning of the summer, but Old Trafford could be about to take advantage of a recently reviewed price of around £24 million.
The 22 year old has been subject to interest from Arsenal all summer, with the North London club already having a bid turned down for him. Arsene Wenger is looking to provide extra strength to his midfield ranks as well, but he could now be beaten to the Carvalho signature by his Premier League rival. Van Gaal is looking to build a new midfield after suffering a four-nil thrashing at MK Dons.
Carvalho could be brought in to replace the likes of Anderson, Tom Cleverley or Shinji Kagawa, as all three players have given disappointing performances during the first three games of this season. With Michael Carrick sidelined through injury, the United midfield is in desperate need of new faces, and Carvalho could join Ander Herrera and Angel di Maria as part of Van Gaal’s future plans.
