Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United are on the brink of signing a promising young Dutch defender, Timothy Fosu Mensah, reports the Daily Mail. The Ajax youth team member impressed greatly during a trial at the Premier League club, and is expected to put pen to paper on a deal worth an initial £300,000.
The 16 year old arrived at United’s Carrington training complex on Thursday, ahead of a move which will see him become incorporated into the famous United youth system. United are believed to have begun their tracking of Fosu Mensah following the player’s involvement in Ajax’s AEGON Future Cup win in April.
The Red Devils have fought off interest from their local rivals Manchester City in order to sign the starlet, as well as Serie A giants Inter Milan. A versatile defender, Fosu Mensah can play in a variety of positions across the backline, which will suit Van Gaal’s tendency to regularly change systems, formations and personnel.
Unlike the likes of Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw, Fosu Mensah will not be brought into the Red Devils’ senior team immediately. The youngster still has significant development to undergo before he is ready to be competing at the top level. However, he is already a notable physical presence, and could break into the Old Trafford first team within the near future.
