The dust has barely settled on the massive summer of spending that Manchester United have conducted, and the purse strings are already being pulled towards the next transfer window in January, reports the Daily Mail. Dutch international Kevin Strootman is said to be top of Louis Van Gaal’s new-year wish-list, as the Red Devils line-up more big name purchases.
Strootman is a favourite of Van Gaal’s following the time that the pair have worked together at international level. The centre midfielder was regularly used by Van Gaal until the time of his injury, ligament damage which ruled him out of the World Cup. However, by January Strootman is expected to have made a full recovery.
At that time Van Gaal will work to add him to his squad, in an attempt to further bolster his midfield dorces. United have brought in Angel di Maria, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind to work within the new-look team, but Van Gaal reportedly wants more money spent, and more additions made.
Given the scale of their spend this summer, it is perhaps not surprising that the kitty remains open for winter. Of course, by then the situation at United could be very different, and Strootman might not be needed. But for now, it is clear that although the club spent around £150 million this year, Van Gaal is still not satisfied.
