Manchester United are set for a busy week as the summer transfer window draws to a close, and they are now primarily targeting Ajax’s Daley Blind, according to reports in the English press. The Red Devils are currently in talks with former player Edwin van der Sar, who has arrived in Manchester from Holland to thrash out a deal.
Blind is considered one of the greatest talents in the Dutch Eredivisie at present, and Louis Van Gaal is thought to be an admirer of his. The player is used most prominently as a defender, although he can also play a holding role in the midfield. Blind earned a regular spot in Van Gaal’s Netherlands side at this summer’s World Cup, and would become a major player in the new-look United team.
An Ajax player at present, Blind’s future is to be decided in the most part by Edwin van der Sar. The former United goalkeeper, Van der Sar was made a member of the Ajax management board in 2012. The Dutchman has been at Carrington, his old training ground, this week in order to stage Blind negotiations.
Should Blind arrive at United before the transfer window closes, then he will become the club’s fifth signing of the summer so far. The Louis Van Gaal era began with the capture of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, then came Luke Shaw from Southampton, Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon, and the British transfer record was smashed with the signing of Angel di Maria from Real Madrid on Tuesday. The winds of change are rapidly passing through Old Trafford this year.
