Southampton have faced a tirade of offers for their over-performing squad so far this summer, and now QPR manager Harry Redknapp is looking to get in on the action, reports the Daily Star. The newly promoted club are in the market for a centre-back, and Saints defender, Jose Fonte is at the top of their list.
Redknapp has earned a reputation in English football as a wheeler dealer figure, and he will be looking to capitalise on the uncertainty that Southampton are currently under. The club lost their manager to Tottenham Hotspur very early on in the window, and Rickie Lambert has already followed him out of the door to Liverpool.
Fonte, who is 30, could be brought in as proven Premier League talent, as QPR look to stay in the top flight following last season’s play-off final victory. The Portuguese defender impressed greatly last season, even though the majority of media attention fell on Southampton’s emerging English talent.
The news will come as yet more dismay for Saints supporters, as their club looks to desperately cling on to their remaining talent. The likes of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Jay Rodriguez have all been linked with moves away, but Jose Fonte had seemed a surer bet to stay. A key influence in the back-line at Saint Mary’s, his loss would be a particularly difficult one to cover up.
