Europa League holders Sevilla are set to rescue Gaston Ramirez from his difficult Southampton career, as the La Liga side close in on a season-long loan deal for the player, reports Inside Futbol. The attacking midfielder could be given the opportunity to make a fresh start, having fallen by the wayside at Saints.
Ramirez was a target of Sevilla’s last summer, but now the Spanish team look to have belatedly got their man. The player joined Southampton in 2012, and as the south coast side fought off interest from Liverpool, his signing had been considered a coup. However, he has failed to adapt to the Premier League particularly effectively, and eventually fell out of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans.
The Uruguayan was also kept out of the Southampton team through injury, however, and is still considered to be a talented player. He does not look likely to stick around at Saints to fight for his position, though, as it is believed that Ramirez would prefer to leave the club in search of something new.
The player could be brought into the Sevilla ranks as a replacement for Ivan Rakitic, who left the club to join Barcelona earlier this summer. Though the transfer is set to be a temporary one, Sevilla will retain the right to purchase Ramirez on a permanent deal in 12 months time, should the player impress during his season on loan.
